Two women, one from Lindenhurst and the other from West Islip, were rescued from a runaway Jetski Sept. 8 thanks to the quick action of a feisty dog, a 12-year-old Amityville boy, Suffolk Marine units and Amityville Police Officers.
The incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at the mouth of the Amityville River. Two women, later identified as Gloria Jackson of Lindenhurst and Maria Fanizzo of West Islip, were on the Jetski in the bay. Jackson, who was the operator, told police that the key to the Jetski fell in the water. The pair were in danger of hitting the pier behind 30 Dewey Avenue.
Ben Gambella, who lives at 30 Dewey Avenue was inside his house doing homework when he heard his dog Rose barking frantically. He went outside and saw the women out in the water and recognized that they were in trouble. They were screaming and calling for help. A neighbor called the fire department while Gambella worked to change the gasoline tanks in his 13-foot Botson Whaler in an effort to get to the women with assistance.

"It was pretty rough out there that day and he was trying to get into the water so that he could take them down river where it was calm. He's quite a responsible kid."
Suffolk County Marine Unit I was paged but was unavailable but within minutes Amityville Fire Department Water Rescue call was sounded and responded to the area with the Amityville Police Department. With assistance from the water rescue team, the women were able to get the Jetski to the pier and were assisted out of the water by Amityville Police Officer David Smith.
