Levy's right in looking for ways to cut budget and firm up services now
      It is wonderful when taxpayers and citizens have the luxury of having police officers assigned to a variety of initiatives and taking on non-traditional roles such as youth leaders, educators and community coordinators. There is no question that such programs help to reduce crime and build a better relationship between the police and the public they serve.

Paterson veto of LIPA law was disappointing
      Dear Editor: I am extremely disappointed that Governor David Paterson vetoed a proposed law that would have prevented the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) from imposing large rate increases without a state review process. Equally troubling is the fact that the LIPA administration aggressively opposed this legislation that would have held it accountable to ratepayers.

Voters on candidates' qualifications, not on their gender or race
      Dear Editor: I was rather disappointed to see a apparent blatant endorsement of one presidential candidate posing as a valid letter to the editor in a recent issue of the Beacon. One would hope that such endorsements would be screened and placed in a proper location as an advertisement. To do otherwise cheapens the publication.
