It is wonderful when taxpayers and citizens have the luxury of having police officers assigned to a variety of initiatives and taking on non-traditional roles such as youth leaders, educators and community coordinators. There is no question that such programs help to reduce crime and build a better relationship between the police and the public they serve. More ... Dear Editor: I am extremely disappointed that Governor David Paterson vetoed a proposed law that would have prevented the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) from imposing large rate increases without a state review process. Equally troubling is the fact that the LIPA administration aggressively opposed this legislation that would have held it accountable to ratepayers. More ... Dear Editor: I was rather disappointed to see a apparent blatant endorsement of one presidential candidate posing as a valid letter to the editor in a recent issue of the Beacon. One would hope that such endorsements would be screened and placed in a proper location as an advertisement. To do otherwise cheapens the publication. More ... |
