St. Joseph's CYO Track team competes in LI Championship; Speedy Soles wins 6 title races and sportsmanship honors
8th Grade 4x400 Relay: Frank Quartararo, Chris Rivera, David Lipsky and Matt McLean. With a record number of young runners, St. Joseph's Parish track team competed in the 2008 CYO Long Island Championships, held on June 18th and 19th at the Mitchell Field Sports Complex in Uniondale.
The "Speedy Soles" from Babylon fielded 49 participants in grades one through eight from seven area towns—more than 92 percent of the team's roster— and competed for championship honors in 46 track and field events. The Soles made their best season-finale showing ever, winning 6 championship titles, and taking 5 second-place medals, 3 third-place medals, and 6 fourths.
The Long Island CYO Championship Meet annually attracts qualifiers from 26 participating track programs in parishes throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. These programs offer young athletes in grades one through eight the opportunity to compete within their age groups in a full slate of running events and relays, from the 60-meter Dash to the Mile Run, as well as field events like the Long Jump and Shot Put.

Qualifying for St. Joseph's this season were:
First Grade : Hope Hansen of West Babylon; Colby Macina of Bay Shore; Carina Rowland of West Babylon, and Sophie Ryan of Babylon.
Second Grade : Katherine Buser of Babylon; Bailey Dell'Erba of Babylon; Peter DeMicco of West Islip; Salvatore Jones of Lindenhurst and Kyra Pigagno of Babylon.
Third Grade: Joseph Carusillo of West Islip; Emmet Chapey of Babylon; Nick Cimaszewski of Babylon; Jordyn Cummings of West Islip; Hollis Hansen of West Babylon; and Brian Squicciarini of Bay Shore.
Fourth Grade: Cooper Coyle of Babylon; Luc Coyle of Babylon; Breanna Kuhner of Babylon; Grant Macina of Bay Shore; Brad McGarvey of Babylon; Meaghan Pashen of Babylon; and Christopher Rowland of West Babylon.

Sixth Grade: Grace Cimaszewski of Babylon; Charlie Folz of West Islip, Austin Funk of Bay Shore; Michael Goldin of Babylon, Hank Hansen of West Babylon; Desirea Hernandez of North Babylon; Joey Randazzo of West Islip; Anthony Rowland of West Babylon; Sean Ryan of Babylon; Jessica Scheriff of Babylon; RJ Squicciarini of Bay Shore; and Dorothy Wilkinson of West Islip.
Seventh Grade: David Lipsky of East Islip; Cecilia McCaffrey of Babylon, Chris Rivera of East Islip; and Mikey Vindell of Babylon.
Eighth Grade: Hannah Hansen of West Babylon, Matthew McLean of Babylon, Frank Quartararo of West Islip and Cathy Sullivan of Bay Shore. Titlewinning performances were turned in by: Emmet Chapey, winner, third-grade boys' 200-meter Dash in 37.8 seconds…Sean Ryan, winner, sixth-grade boys' 400-meter Dash in 68.5 seconds…Desirea Hernandez, winner, sixth-grade girls' 800-Meter Run in 2 minutes, 51.2 seconds…Jessica Scheriff, winner, sixth-grade girls' Mile Run in 5 minutes, 55.9 seconds, fastest time of the Championships for girls in all grades…and Matt McLean, winner, eighth-grade boys' 800-meter Run in 2 minutes, 34.5 seconds, fastest time of the Championships. Also winning a championship title and capping an undefeated season in the eighth-grade boys' 4x400 meter relay was the team of Frank Quartararo, Chris Rivera, David Lipsky and Matt McLean.
Emmet Chapey, LI CYO track champion. At the Championships, the team was also recognized for good sportsmanship throughout the season with the annual Bishop Gerald J. Ryan Award.
St. Joseph's CYO Track is coached by Jess Prochilo, Fred Bertino, Joe Bertino and Eric Lipsky. Assisting in coaching this season were: Mike Anderson, Kerry Clancey, Mary Corcoran, Estelle Culpepper, Catherine Erdelyi, Victoria Folz, Grace Hoffman, Danielle Lang, Laura Prochilo, Andrew Strauch, Caitlyn Ude, Jessica Boden and Elizabeth Sutton.
