Little Docs helping out at the Babylon blood drive
Shown in the photo, Babylon Memorial Grade School hosted a blood drive in conjunction with Long Island Blood Services. Fifth grade students Nicholas Ruotolo, Matt Lauri, and Breanna Morrow were just a few of the students that volunteered during the event as "Little Doctors," and helped the donors with paperwork and served much-needed post-donation drinks. Even though the students do not yet meet the criteria for donating, Babylon Memorial Grade School recently organized a school blood drive with Long Island Blood Services in order to do their part to help combat the shortage of blood donations across America.
Prior to the drive, representatives from Long Island Blood Services visited the school's students to teach the students about blood, blood donation, and blood transfusions. The students learned how blood circulates throughout your body, what blood is made of, and what makes an ideal blood donor. On the day of the blood drive students in fifth grade volunteered as "Little Doctors," and assisted donors with such things as filling out their paperwork and serving much-needed post-donation drinks.
"We learned that only two percent of Long Islanders donate blood," stated Matt Lauri, a fifth grader at the school. "That just isn't enough" and we wanted to do something to help increase that amount. Everyone's body needs blood to live, so we hope that by hosting this drive we are doing our part to help out."
