Mary O'Malley, Amityville resident and helper of the less fortunate
2008-08-14 / Obituaries
O'Malley(nee McLaughlin), a resident of Amityville for nine years, and a former resident of West Islip for over 40 years, was a volunteer woman at heart. Her family agreed that her passion in life was volunteering for the less fortunate, including spending time with veterans at the Stonybrook Vet's home, and volunteering at the Special Olympics in Suffolk County. Mrs. O'Malley died at the age of 98 on July 12th 2008. She worked as a bookkeeper for Conklin Brass and Copper in New York City until her retirement, and was an active member of St. Monica's Church in West Islip, and started a group for young children in the American Legion. Later in life, she moved to the Dominican Village Residence in Amityville.
Although Mary O'Malley never had children, she considered her many nieces and nephews to be her children. Her niece Rosemary Ciccone said that "she was very sweet, very dedicated to her nieces and nephews." Her niece Elizabeth Conlon adds that "she was a wonderful person; she had a terrific sense of humor and told jokes right up until a few days before her death." Her niece Rosemary remembers that "we used to look forward to going to her home in West Islip." Mrs. O'Malley and her husband built that house together in 1950. "She used to take us swimming and blueberry picking there, and gave us a lot of individual attention." Elizabeth Conlon adds that "We all loved going fishing on Deer Lake in West Islip." In addition to volunteering and spending time with her family in West Islip, Mrs. O'Malley also loved throwing bbqs and family parties with her husband, Michael, before his death. Mrs. O'Malley also had a passion for Disney World; she went on vacation there often, and her favorite rides were the People Mover and Space Mountain. Mrs. O'Malley leaves behind over 30 beloved nieces and nephews from the Conlon, McLaughlin, Anatrella, Baker, Canarie, O'Malley and Walsh families. Funeral Services were held at Giove Funeral Home in Middle Island on Mon. July 14th, with a funeral Mass held Tues. July 15th at 12 at St. Mark's R. C. Church in Shoreham. Interment followed at the Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.- Login to post comments
