HEARD IT ON THE GRAPEVINE
ACTUALLY NANA KJELDSEN LIVES IN BAYSHORE, BUT A GREAT DEAL OF HER VOLUNTEER TIME WAS SPENT IN BABYLON AND WEST ISLIP, especially at Good Samaritan Hospital where she was a faithful volunteer for 30 years. Nana died last week and we want to extend
our sympathy to her beautiful family. She will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her. As one of her friends said, "She was a role model," a wonderful example for the community to follow. OOPS WE'RE SORRY. In last week's issue we printed an item in the column that two men had been briefly lost on the outing to Block Island. Actually, it was two women. We regret the error. SAW LOTS OF PEOPLE LAST THURSDAY NIGHT at Lily Flanagan's - the place was jumping with "kids" music and they had a very good crowd. Fran and Bob's table was full of close friends and family. Their daughter Robin was here from California enroute to Point O'Woods where she's spending the month of August with her family; saw our own distinguished country lawyer, Gus Fishel, Leg.Wayne Horsley was there and Trustee Alice Vanderveldt
and her husband and great fisherman "Joe Joe"; Debbie Basile, who was in charge; and Joe Leone. Judge Patrick Henry was there and of course his son, Councilman Lindsay Henry. It was good to see "Ray Ray," our former Village board member "Ray Ray" Accettella looked terrific, just like the successful businessman that he is. We hear that a profit was made to enable the renovations to continue on the vintage house which brings so much joy to so many people.Theresa Santmann won the raffle, a big-screen television set, which she generously donated to the Babylon Library.
UH OH, WE ALMOST forgot our Mayor who does such a great job in our Village, which never looked nicer. Of course Ralph was there, and made an excellent speech, enjoyed by all. NOW ON TO ANOTHER SUBJECT. We're talking about Mary Gallagher, who has decided to retire after a 22-year career teaching English as a second language in Amityville. Mary plans a number of activities in future years. She'll continue to work for the Babylon Library, the Babylon Village Historical Society, she plans to devote time to the Pilot Club, and we're happy about this one - Mary will join the Babylon Busy Women, the oldest Women's Club in the Village where she'll be of tremendous help for all of their projects in our Village. (Is writing going to be in her future?). Stay tuned.
WHO WAS THE PILOT OF THE STEALTH BOMBER THAT FLEW OVER SHEA STADIUM? It was none other that Babylon Village resident Colonel John Robinson, son of Corinne Robinson and the late John Robinson of the U.S. Air Force. This was a distinct honor, and we're all proud of our "local boy."
AUGUST IS HERE, and that means block parties are on the scene. Last week the people of Alton Road, Mayhew Avenue, Cambridge Avenue, Wilson Drive and Westridge Avenue held the party. They had everything. The best food ever - barbecue, all kinds of salad, baked goods, etc., etc., They also had a rock wall and a great crowd. Over the weekend, the people of Twin Oaks had a block party and everything was terrific. If you're involved, let us know - write to Heard it on the Grapevine, c/o The Beacon, 65 Deer Park Ave., Babylon, NY 11702
