Daniel Street school kindergartners in Lindenhurst watch quails hatch
Shown in the photo is Tracy Prevete with her kindergarten students, some holding the recently hatched baby quail. Tracy Prevete's kindergarten students received the quail eggs 28 days ago. The class had the unique opportunity to explore the process of how a quail develops. They conducted various science activities, in conjunction with William Howard's fourth-graders.
The quails are kept in cages and under heated lamps. They are fed turkey starter and drink water with marbles, so they don't drown. The students will continue to care for the quails until the end of the school year. At that time they will return the baby quails to Suffolk BOCES where they will be raised. After approximately six months, they are released into the environment to eat deer ticks. "It is really cool to have baby quail in our classroom. We are also helping the environment," said kindergarteners Anthony and Evan. "We take care of them now and they eat deer ticks to help us later."
