West Babylon young adult with learning disabilties to receive national award

2008-07-31 / People/Social

Kevin Simmons of West Babylon, age19, has severe learning disabilities in reading, writing and mathematics. That hasn't stopped him from taking a leadership role in his school and community. He has become a leader in many community service activities. Simmons is treasurer and president of his school's Leo Club, raises money for numerous charities and is an honors student. Because of his achievements, Simmons will receive a Yes I Can! Award from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) in April.

Each year, CEC honors 29 students who have excelled despite disabilities and is proud to honor Kevin with this award. Awards are given in nine categories: academics, arts, athletics, community service, employment, extracurricular activities, independent living skills, self advocacy, and technology.

Despite his disabilities, Kevin has passed two advanced placement courses. He also completed the requirements for an Advanced Regents Diploma. At the same time, Kevin has contributed to the community through various service activities and leadership opportunities. Kevin received the West Babylon Junior High School Outstanding Citizenship Award in 2004. When Simmons arrived at West Babylon High School, he faced social challenges included bullying because he wears a hearing aid. He lives with his single mother who also has disabilities. Despite these difficulties, Kevin has become a model student and leader in his school.

CEC, the leading association for special educators, works to improve the educational success of students with disabilities and/or gifts and talents. The Council represents members serving more than 7.1 million students with disabilities and 3 million gifted students.
