Babylon Little League Completes an Amazin' Spring Season; summer league underway
Players from the A's and Mets meet midfield to congratulate each other after the Minors Championship game. The Babylon Little League recently completed an amazin' spring season. From T-Ball all the way through the Majors Division all the boys and girls had a fun time playing baseball. Along with successes on the field, there were successes and accomplishments off the field too.
Babylon Baseball and Softball Team Swing into District 34 Tournament
The Babylon Little League Summer teams started the District 34 Tournament recently with swinging success. The League is represented by baseball teams from ages 8-12 and minor and major league softball teams. •The 8 year old baseball team got off to a 2-1 start and into the AA pool which means they are eligible to play for a gold medal. In their opening game they defeated Commack North Black by a score of 24-1. Every Babylon player scored at least 1 run. Mathew Lavin pitched 3 innings, striking out 9 batters and Andrew Szuchy hit a 3 run home run. They followed that up with a second overwhelming effort, winning 20-3 vs. Bay Shore Grey, behind outstanding pitching from Joseph Rende and Ryan McCabe and some exceptional hitting, including a huge 2-out bases-loaded double by Joey McHugh and triple rocketed to right by Julian Romero. Coaches Danny McHugh, Mike Lavin and Ken Rende have been so proud of all the boys' efforts in all the games and practices. •The 9 year old baseball team started out with 3 wins in a row and a spot in the AA pool of their tournament. In their first game Babylon defeated Larkfield by a score of 3-0. Anthony Vano pitched a solid 4 innings of scoreless baseball and was relieved by Danny Levins who pitched his way out of bases loaded both innings to keep Larkfield from scoring. Kenny Rohl's home run was the hit of the game for Babylon. In their 2nd game, Babylon's 9 yr olds defeated North Babylon. The team played great defense and offense from the start. Brandon Bierle pitched and held North Babylon to 1 run. Babylon's bats were alive all game long with Max Kresek hitting a triple and a double in big spots. North Babylon scored 3 runs in the top of the 6th to make it a 6-4 game, until Max Kresek came in to relieve Zach Amelia and closed the inning out in 8 pitches. Coaches Andrew Amelia, Anthony Vano and Jim Bierle cannot be prouder of the entire team. All wins wouldn't be possible without the entire team contributing. •The 10 year old baseball team also started out 3-0 in their tournament putting them in the AA pool with a chance at a gold medal. They defeated Larkfield by a score of 7-4 in their opener, West Islip white 12-2 in their 2nd game and one of the top seeds Deer Park Maroon 5-3 to close out this set of games. Coaches Sean Marron, Dave Zarrello, Mike Carmody and Tim Daly have the boys in top form and ready to play every game. •The 11 year old team started off their tournament with a 15-0 win over Commack North White. Spencer Meyerson pitched a complete game shutout and also had 2 hits including a ground rule double. Chris Dewey had 3 hits and 4 RBI's to lead the offense. Liam Young had 3 hits and scored 2 runs and Joey Savastano scored 3 runs for Babylon. 9 different players scored runs for the team. Drew Helling made the final out with a fine running catch in right field. The next 2 games the team ran into two top seeds and lost both games although they played very well. Coaches Ricky Young, Gordon Blau, Mark Howard and Rich Meyerson are very proud of the team this year. They are coming off a silver medal win last year and will look to achieve another one this year.
•The 12 year old team is 0-2 so far in the extremely tough and competitive 12 year old division. They lost their opener by a score of 3-1. Matt Finelli pitched a terrific game with 10 strike outs. Ryan O'Connor also had a great game. Their next game was to the #2 seed Commack North team. The team is coached by Nick Giampietro, Mike Grady and Tom Dowling. They have a lot of players who are new to tournament baseball and they will look to put a few wins together.
