Deer Park man struck by car and seriously injured

A Deer Park man was struck and seriously injured by a car in front of his home yesterday, July 8. The victim, William Gilbert, 25, of 21 Wright Ave., was playing ball in front of his home when he chased a basketball into the street. A 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva traveling south on Wright Avenue near the intersection of Kelly Place struck Gilbert at approximately 4:28 p.m. The vehicle was driven by Timothy Schaefer, 43, of Hope Mills, North Carolina who was in the area visiting relatives. Shaefer's vehicle was impounded for a safety check and no summonses were issued. The investigation is continuing. Gilbert was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center where he is being treated for head trauma and multiple abrasions.
