West Babylon Eagles win state championship
West Babylon knew that this was the year- the year to complete the dream; the year to make the playoff run which wouldn't stop until the mission was accomplished; the year when they would finally bring a state championship back to their hometown. The Eagles postseason run was nothing short of magical. After a first round upset over Bayshore, they seemed to ride the Cinderella slipper all the way through a postseason that seemed to be an unreal experience for the players. West Babylon knew that much of their success would ride on the shoulders of star junior Chelsea Shea. West Babylon's all Long Island pitcher proved to be the backbone of the state championship team. With three straight games of shut out baseball in the postseason, she showed her team nothing short of a spectacular performance.
West Babylon Softball champs: Coaches Nicole Fredericks and Danielle Richert, Renee Caifa, Amanda Vetter, Melani Maxwell, Hannah Leary, Melissa Frederick, Brianna Eaqszak, Coach Theresa Needham, Danielle Messina, Coach Nick Martone. Middle row, Kayla Guerrera, Aubrey Walker, Kasey Melzer, Elizabeth Escobar, Taylor Webb. Seated is Chelsea Shea. "When she gives the batter a pitch to hit, she wants the batter to hit it" explained Coach Nick Martone. "She's not a big vocal leader, but she sets an example for all other players." But even Chelsea knew that to complete the team's goal, it would have to be a team effort. "We knew we had to come out strong" and that's exactly what we did," she said. West Babylon won the state championship game 6-1 in another Chelsea Shea victory. The team that the coach said to "handle every game like its business as usual" was finally able to celebrate the well-deserved victory.
