     To animal lovers, pets are pure poetry in motion. Walt Whitman's work didn't glorify dogs or cats; however, in Stanza 32 of "Song of Myself" (published in 1855) Long Island's most celebrated poet does praise the simplicity of all animals:

      WE'VE GOT BIRTHDAYS TO TELL YOU ABOUT... We'll start with Mary Freund (the best dancer in town). Mary celebrated with her sister Betty Breslin of Smithtown and her sister-in-law Rose Conneally of Deer Park. The gals enjoyed a delicious luncheon at the Post Office Cafe in Babylon Village. Many happy returns to three great ladies.
