Longtime educator & volunteer, Daniel Meder
Retired Lindenhurst High School teacher and Bay Shore volunteer Daniel F. Meder Sr. died February 25, 2008. He would have been 83 years old on April 1.
Born in Brooklyn, he was a World War II veteran who served with the U.S. Navy's Seabees. He taught English at Lindenhurst High School from 1954 to 1987, when he retired.
For more than 51 years, he lived in West Islip and served in many volunteer positions. He was past council president of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Bay Shore, a board of director member for the West Islip Orchestra Symphony and a board trustee of Sagtikos Manor in Bay Shore.
"He has always been a hardworking, positive member of our board that helped in many ways," said Nancy Donohue, Sagtikos Manor Society president who said he was with them for about 12 years.
He leaves behind his wife of more than 51 years, Norma; his children: Daniel Jr. and his wife Patricia of New Jersey, Paul and his wife Marjorie of Georgia, John and his wife Bonnie of Plainview, Thomas and his wife Frances of New Jersey and Robert of California; his grandchildren: Erika, Daniel, Ryan, Kevin, Thomas Jr., John Jr., Brian, Gregory and Joseph; and his brothers: Frederick and William.
He reposed at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home on February 27 and 28, 2008. A Funeral Service was held on February 29, 2008 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Bay Shore followed by interment at Calverton National Cemetery.
