Banjo Society to hold free performances
      The general public is invited to free performances of the Long Island Banjo Society every Friday night at 8 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall at 270 Trouville Rd, Copiague, one block south of Oak Street between Route 110 and Great Neck Rd. You can sing along and dance to the music. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with candlelight tables and music from the 40s via D.J.

National MS Society MS Walk to take place in May
      With more than two and a half months until the 2008 MS Walk, its clear that Long Islanders have joined the movement to help end the devastating effects of Multiple Sclerosis. Over 115 teams have pledged to walk in the upcoming fundraiser, taking place on Sun., May, 4 at Belmont State Park and Jones Beach State Park.

      On Sat., May 17, Dominican Village, located in Amityville, will host its 2008 Spring Dinner Dance fundraiser. This annual event provides a source of supplemental income to help defray the expenses associated with running a leading not-for-profit independent retirement community.

Lions Club scholarship available
      Once again, the Deer Park Lions Club will award the Francis D. Olivio $1,000 scholarship to a deserving high school student or returning college student who is a Deer Park resident and will be attending college in the fall of 2008. This scholarship is given in memory of a past president of the Deer Park Lions, Frank Olivio. Who was very active in the Deer Park community.

      The Suffolk County Women's Business Enterprise Coalition (SCWBEC) will hold its annual Business Expo & Luncheon on Mon., April 14, at the Smithtown Sheraton, 110 Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, Hauppauge. The expo is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Veteran collecting patches - do you have any?
      James D. Wooten, a U.S. Army SpecialForces veteran, living in Arizona has little to do these days. He suffered a serious stroke in 1994 and by his own admission "Is having a pretty tough time of it." One thing that keeps him busy these days is his collection of patches- police, FBI, SWAT, Marshal, K-9, ambulance, wildlife and others.

Knights of Columbus spring drive for our troops
      The Knights of Columbus #6911 in Massapequa Park is conducting a spring drive to collect items which will be shipped to our servicemen and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Several businesses have agreed to display drop boxes where donated items can be deposited. The items will be picked up by members of the Council's Adopt-A-Battalion committee.

Virtual field trip to Hawaii
      Second grade students from Frank J. Cannon Southeast Elementary School in the Brentwood School District recently went on a virtual field trip to Hawaii. Students read Dumpling Soup by Jama Rattigan. In this story, a girl helps her family make dumplings for the traditional New Year's Eve meal celebrated in Hawaii.

Music Lovers Club to hold meeting
      The Music Lovers Club will hold its next meeting Mon., March 31, 2 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Sally Shorrock on flute accompanied by Isabella Eredito-Johnson on piano. All are welcome. The meeting will be held at the United Methodist Church, 350 Main St., Islip. Parking is on Church Avenue on the west side of the church and on Smith Avenue on the east.

Art Museum to present exhibit
      The Islip Art Museum is presenting Couples, an exhibition of work by artists who share their lives, and sometimes their studios, in order to examine the way love, commitment and cohabitation affect the creative process. The exhibition will be on view in the museum's main galleries at Brookwood Hall, 50 Irish Ln., East Islip, April 2 through June 1.

Amityville Fire Dept. Easter egg hunt
      The annual Amityville Fire Department Easter egg hunt will take place on Sunday March 23 @ 11:00 AM at Peterkin Park on Oak St. The Easter Bunny and Easter Chick will arrive by fire truck to start the hunt. In the event of rain, the Easter Bunny and Chick will be handing out eggs at the Amityville Fire House located at 55 West Oak Street.

      The Long Island Parent Center located at 887 Kellum St., Lindenhurst, is having a Special Needs Summer Camp and Recreational Activities Fair. The fair is on Sat. April 12, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair is free to all. Families and professionals looking for activities for a child with a disability are invited to attend.

The topic is Living with Arthritis: Understanding and Learning New Skills for Self Help and Group Support.

Ascension Lutheran Church to honor retiring pastor
      The Rev. Dennis O'Rourke, pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church, 33 Bay Shore Rd., Deer Park, has announced his retirement and will preach his last sermon at the church on Sat., March 29 at the 6 p.m. service and on Sun. March 30 at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. The congregation has been blessed to have the O'Rourke family at Ascension for 15 years.
