Jim Smith, Inter-County bus owner & proud Babylon Lion

Lifelong Babylon Village resident James "Jimmy" K. Smith, Sr., who was an enthusiastic and active member of the Babylon Lion's Club, died Dec. 3, 2007. He was 62 and spent his life in Babylon Village running the family business.

"His motto as a Lion and in life was 'failure is not an option,'" said his friend and co-Lion Robert Meyer. "He participated in many daily acts of kindness anonymously. His spirit and enthusiasm has always been infectious."

A Babylon High School graduate, he was a star football player and wrestler. A longtime Argyle Park resident, he owned and ran the Inter-County Motor Coach, a 70-year old bus company based on Deer Park Avenue that ran from Babylon Village to casinos in New Jersey and Connecticut.

Mr. Smith was a longtime leader with the Babylon Lions' and was president from 2006 to 2007, chairman of their Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter baskets, which provide food to local families in need. He co-chaired the food pantry program, and was the driving force behind the Lions' annual Beer, Food & Wine EXPO.

In addition, he was co-founder and chairman of the Lions' annual Super Bowl Party, which has raised more than $150,000 for charity since its inception.

He was also active with the Babylon Village Youth Project and was named the organization's 2005 Man of the Year for his support of local youth.

He leaves behind his wife, Lisa; his father, Irving; his children: Kimberly and her husband Kenneth, James Jr., Kerry and her husband Stephen, Erin and her husband Jeffrey and Dakota James; his four grandchildren; his siblings: Linda Tobia, Joni and Sally; and his mother-in-law Margaret; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother Loel "Tookie," his brother-in-law Frank and his father-in-law Gerard Rimmelin.

Mr. Smith reposed at the Claude R. Boyd Funeral Home, Babylon on December 6, 2007. Interment followed in North Babylon Cemetery.
