Fire Island Lighthouse New Year's Day hike

The Fire Island Lighthouse is sponsoring a New Year's Day Nature Hike and Lighthouse Tour. Meet at the Robert Moses State Parking Field #5 at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 1. Join naturalist Steve Finn of the American Littoral Society for a guided walk around the western end of the National Seashore. Learn about how the beach reacts to erosion and how the flora and fauna interact with the winter weather. Bring binoculars if you have them. There is no fee for the walk; there is a $6 fee for the Tower Tour. Light refreshments will be included and reservations are required.

On Saturday, January 12 at 9 a.m. follow one of our present day lighthouse keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the lighthouse Keepers Workshop in the bassement of the Keepers Quarters to the beacon in the lanthern room of the lighthouse. Learn how lighthouse keepers in the 1860's andto 2008 maintained the lighthouse. Reservations are required. Limit 12 people.
