Former Babylonians bring a little bit of Long Island to their new home in Arizona
by Carolyn James

Robert and Helen (nee Hoyt) Fraser, former longtime Babylon Village residents, are looking to bring a little piece of Long Island to their new lakeside community in Arizona. The Lake Havashu residents have sponsored construction of a replica of the Fire Island Lighthouse as part of a project in Lake Havashu to increase boating safety and provide an additional attraction for visitors of the lake.

The work is supported by the Lightouses of Lake Havashu club, which reached out to individuals, families and businesses to become "beacons" themselves by bringing this important lighting to the lake.

"We immediately thought of the Fire Island Lighthouse and agreed to sponsor it for the program," said Bob, a former Suffolk County Police Officer and county traffic engineer. "We anticipate that the lighthouse will go up some time next year.

The community is well known for its replica of the London Bridge, which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. "Many are also coming to see the lighthouses now," said Fraser.

Robert Keller, a former resident of upstate New York and now of Lake Havashu, is heading up the project. The 45 mile lake has more than 400 miles of shoreline and was in dire need of lighting. When efforts to get the government to install them failed, residents decided to take on the project themselves.

"We held an annual golf tournament and put some of the proceeds from that event toward the project," said Keller.

To date, they have put up 13 lighthouses with another 8 in various forms of construction. The group anticipates it will need at least 35 lighthouses for adequate navigation.

"They are really navigation lights, but they happen to look like lighthouses," said Keller.

Sponsorships for each lighthouse are $4,000, which includes some money for maintenance.

"The Fraser's have wonderful memories of their lives in Babylon," said Bob. The couple lived on Cedar Lane Helen's father, Michael Hoyt, was a member of the Babylon Fire Department. They moved to Arizona in 1991. Robert was a member of the American Legion Post 94 and a Mason in the Babylon Lodge. In addition, Bob said the lighthouse will also make him think of his daughter and grandchildren who live in Kismet and pass the lighthouse every day as they come and go from their home.
