Lorraine Alice Phillips Brill, former resident of Babylon
Born Jan. 18, 1930, to William and Annie Robertshaw Phillips in Jersey City, New Jersey, Mrs. Brill grew up in Bayonne, New Jer- sey and was a talented singer. As a high School student, she became a member of the chorus and gave many solo recitals in the New York City area, including at St. John's Cathedral and Robert Shaw's chorale. She majored in voice at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where she sang with the youth choir for Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. She began her teaching career at BOCES, Long Island, teaching music and conducting choruses for 12 years in Babylon. Her students sang in state choirs and earned many awards. She was also honored with the opportunity to conduct an All-Long Island choir of select music students. She married Jerome Brill in 1954 and the couple had two children, Lorri and Jeff. She was a member of the local PTA and enjoyed singing in the Babylon chorale. After living 32 years on Long Island, Mrs. Brill and her husband moved to Hendersonville in 1987. She quickly became active with the Friends of theLibrary , along with her husband, and she served as membership chair and volunteer chair for the annual book sales. "Raine was a party person who enjoyed the company of many friends and neighbors," said her husband who described her as creative, outgoing and dynamic. "Her life was filled with love of travel and camping with her family." The couple visited 48 states in cars and campers, necessitated by Mrs. Brill's fear of flying. In addition to her husband Jerome (Jerry), Mrs. Brill is survived by her children, Lorri Hickson of Asheville, North Carolina and Jeff and his wife Kim of Clarksville, Tennessee. She was predeceased by her parents and her son-in-law Michael.
Mrs.Brill reposed at the Jackson Funeral Service and Crematory in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Services were held there Nov. 26, 2007.
