West Islip Tennis - Kristin Alotta captures 2007 suffolk singles championship

Shown in the photo are Kristen Alotta and Coach Kevin Lewis.
For the first time in West Islip School's history, a girl's single player won the Section XI singles championship and placed fourth in New York State. Kristin Alotta, a senior, captured the Division II singles championship for the sixth year in a row. As the only girl champion to do this, it was not good enough for Alotta as she carved her way through the Section 11 Tournament earning the victory by defeating Lea Kepping 6-3, 7-5 in the finals. By defeating Kepping from Northport, Alotta earned a trip upstate to Syracuse for the New York State Championships.

The state tournament was held outside of Syracuse at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manilus. Alotta was seeded fourth in the tournament not only for her outstanding play but also for her ranking in the U.S.T.A. Alotta won her first match in two sets.

Her next match, however, proved to be much more difficult as Alotta faced Lucy Mehrabyan from Section 4. She was pushed to three sets in the third set Mehrabyan hurt her leg and was unable to continue. Alotta lost a very close three setter in the quarterfinals to Diana Lorentz from Section I but was able to regroup and win her next two matches to place fourth in the state.

According to Coach Kevin Lewis, he has never before coached a player who has had such a fantastic overall game. More importantly, she has inspired her fellow teammates and friends to play at their highest level along with having a ball in the meantime. Alotta was voted captain by her teammates for the second year in a row. Her final record for this season was 26 wins and only one loss. Over Alotta's career, the team has won three Division II championships and has made one trip to the Section XI team finals. Alotta is currently ranked second in her class and she plans on attending Will-

iams College in the fall playing on their nationally ranked tennis team still keeping academics her top priority.

Next year will be a building year for West Islip as there will be nine seniors graduating.

The team consists of All State Kristin Alotta; All-League: Mackenzie Kurek, Lauren Montanino, Kelsey Kjedlsen and Daniela Cassataro; seniors: Kiersten Faherity, Bridget Verdillo, Jennifer Hessian, Christine Hoffman, Adina Bono and Karen Lehmann and junions Kristin Richards, Sheri Helberg and Christine Ibraham.
