Christmas angels here on earth I spent Saturday afternoon in the company of young men and women far less fortunate than most of us. They are profoundly retarded and live in a group home. It was the home's annual Christmas party and family and friends gathered to celebrate with them, to the extent that the residents were able to enjoy the festivities with their limited capacities. The home is funded by the state and operated as a not for profit agency. It is bright, cheerful, immaculately clean and filled with photographs of the residents on many of their outings. There is a warm kitchen, comfortable living room and each resident has a bedroom fitted to their special needs. But the real wonder of the home is the staff. They provide a level of care and commitment that is beyond what most of us experience on a day-to-day basis. Their compassion is expressed in their willingness to get to know each of their charges, and their understanding in the way they ensure their dignity and respect. I share this story with my readers at this time of year not to focus on the limits of these retarded adults, nor their difficult lives but to bring you an experience of the expanse of human spirit they make happen in this world, and to recognize these health-care providers who are angels on earth.
I felt more like the "less fortunate," celebrating the Christmas holiday with them that day, but left with a renewed spirit and understanding of the meaning of the season. May you and yours experience it as well.
