Sara Smith, Centenarian Babylon educator

Longtime Babylon educator and coach Sara "Aunt Sally" Smith died at her home on November 1, 2007. She was 100 years old.

Born in Bay Shore, she was a dedicated English teacher at Babylon High School for 27 years and coached cheerleading for many years during the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

She was an active member of many local clubs such as the Bay Shore Historical Society, according to her family. Her Victorian home which she lived in and took care of for more than 60 years was designated for historical preservation in 1990.

Mrs. Smith leaves behind her sister, Anne Mastriani; her many neices and nephews; and grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond.

A Celebration the Liturgy of Christian Burial was held at St. Patrick's R.C. in Bay Shore, followed by interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Babylon. Arrangements entrusted to the Frederick J. Chapey Funeral Home in East Islip.
