Babylon Village kicks off holiday season
by Janine Logan

A dusting of snow fell just as the Old Fashioned Night of Shopping in Babylon Village got underway Friday evening, December 7, 2007, lending a bit of holiday magic to the event.

Earlier in the week, Sunday, December 2, 2007, Santa arrived to greet the children at Argyle Park, and he too, was welcomed by a light frost. Villagers gathered around him and the large tree in the park, and another Babylon Village holiday tradition got underway with Mayor Ralph Scordino flipping the switch to light the holiday tree.

The Old Fashioned Night of Shopping, sponsored by the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce, brought out the merriest of shoppers and merchants, as the "just brisk" temperature was perfect for a night of shopping and strolling.

"This is our second Old Fashioned Night of shopping," said shopkeeper Karen Young, "and it is the best night of the year for us. We've had a steady stream of customers all evening. The hot seller this year is the penguin Webkin." Young is the proprietor of Young Imagination, a whimsical toy story on the corner of Grove Place and Deer Park Ave.

All along Deer Park Avenue and Main Street store owners could be found in and outside their shops either grilling good food for hungry customers or helping customers select the perfect holiday gift. Along the way, street performers delighted children and adults.

"This night is a wonderful tradition," said Dyanne Going, who was out with her daughters and their friends. "It's not as cold as in years past, so it's easy to enjoy the event."

Enjoyment was on everyone's mind, including Rita Koncelik, who grew up in Babylon village, moved away, and has now returned. She was one of the many guests who stopped by the Wassail Bowl, hosted by the Babylon Village Historical and Preservation Society on Sunday, December 2. Wassail is a warmed mulled cider punch that dates back to Victorian times. The Historical Society has been keeping this tradition alive for decades.

"I find it delightful to see people I haven't seen in a long time," said Koncelik. "The Wassail Bowl starts off the holiday season for me, and then I go to the spaghetti dinner sponsored by Boy Scout Troop 194."

A highlight of the Wassail Bowl is the drawing for the handcrafted quilt designed by the Heritage Quilters, the group affiliated with the Historical Society that raises funds for the Society through this annual quilt raffle. This year's winner was Mrs. Aubin.

The festivities wrapped up with the Holiday Village Cookie Contest, part of the Nathaniel Conklin House annual "Christmas at the Conklin House." Winners this year were: Adult - Ashley Rundell; Buddy and Me - Shayne Antolini; High School - Keryn Arnold; and Junior High - Devyn Antolini, Emily Funk, Kerry Glenday, and Nicole Marro.
