Heard It On The Grapevine IT'S OFFICIAL - CHRISTMAS HAS COME TO BABYLON VILLAGE Yes, the festivities started at the annual tree lighting ceremonies sponsored by the Babylon Business and Professional Association on Sunday, Dec. 2 at Argyle Park when they lit the giant Christmas tree. The weather didn't cooperate- it was very cold, but everyone's spirits were high. Paul Steinberg played Christmas carols on his keyboard as he has for years, and Gene Turner led the group in singing. Rev. Conrad Strauch of St. Paul's Reformed Church gave the invocation, and of course, Santa was there. THEN IT WAS ON TO THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY for the annual Wassail Bowl Party and the raffling off of the beautiful hand-quilted Log Cabin quilt made by the dedicated quilters all year long. Mayor Ralph Scordino was there to pull the name of the lucky winner's name, and the delighted winners were Darlene and Bill Aubin of Foster Lane. All proceeds go to the Historical Society. This very giving group of quilters sent quilts to many places and organizations. This week's quilts were sent to Brentwood and Wyandanch. Kudos to all, the Bill Holmes' who made and served the delicious punch and to The Historical Society President Jackie Marsden who, works so hard all year long for the Historical Society, which serves the community in so many ways. NOW THE BIG MOMENT HAS COME - The unveiling of the Conklin House in all its glory on Friday night. There was a slight powder of snow on the ground, enough to make the place look like a winter wonderland or a scene from a movie. The Junior High played Christmas carols. They were: Johnathan Andur, Carmen Rodriguez, John Testa, Sarah Grasser, Juliette Incandeoa, Lyndsey Kelly and Erin Rahn. Everyone devoured the cookies made by the kids who participated in the very successful cookie-baking contest and the sandwiches prepared by the Babylon "Busy Women." Saw Ginny Eckelberry, Anita North, Belle Baxter, Karen Deesing, and Ellie Khorade. Fran Pasch, Elizabeth Karoly, Karen Petz, Larry Nye, Gene Turner and Norman Aripatch were working in the barn all evening, (it was freezing out there). Trustee Debbie Basile seemed to be everywhere working on a zillion projects and Denise Reilly, chairman of the committee did a great job managing the flow of traffic in and out of the beautiful old building so that everyone had a chance to see the various beautifully decorated rooms. The kids and their families waiting outside for their turn to be served cookies and refreshments by the elves. All of this and a night of old-fashioned shopping sponsored by the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce. Saw Santa on the beautiful horse & buggy carriage, all in all, it gets better every year. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who worked so hard. LOOKING FOR THAT PERFECT GIFT? We suggest you go to "Roomors" and order one of the beautiful tree ornaments of Village scenes depicting the Gilbert C. Hanse Pool - the price is only $18 and $1 from the sale goes to the needy children of the area. WELCOME BACK to Mary Jane Young who has just returned from a 10- day trip to England where she visited with her son Christopher Palmer and his wife Gabrielle, daughters Isabella and Madeleine and son Chip in their new home. They had a fine time attending the theater and sightseeing. Christopher is a principal of the Gartmore Corporation. AND STILL MORE RUMORS. Last week we wrote that Walgreen's Drug Store was involved in the purchase of La Grange. Now another rumor - we hear from a very reliable source that a large bank is also involved. We'll keep you informed. ISABELLE GALLAGHER IS A GREAT GRANDMOTHER FOR THE FOURTH TIME. Isabelle's grandson Ryan and his wife of Ballston Lake welcomed their first child, Sean Nathaniel on Thanksgiving Day weighing in at nine pounds. The baby's grandparents are Rob and Lilianne Gallagher.
ANOTHER LOSS FOR OUR VILLAGE. Many of our readers still remember Bill Simonson who spent his summers in Amityville. Bill was a well-known sailor and participated in many of the Great South Bay races. Bill died in his winter home in Jupiter on December 1. He was the owner of the Simonson Funeral Home in Richmond Hill and is survived by his wife Elizabeth, his son William, his daughter Elizabeth and sister Malvina Turner.
