First tree lighting at local parish

For the first time, St. Joseph Church in Babylon will host a Christmas tree lighting on Dec. 9, after the 5 p.m. Sunday Mass.

"We light this Christmas tree to honor Christ who is the light of the world and shines in our hearts," said Msgr. Chris Heller, pastor of St. Joseph Parish, who will preside at the 30-minute ceremony that will include prayer, song and lights.

At the tree lighting, the parish will also honor Judy Kaczanowski, a long time employee and volunteer who has served at St. Joseph's school and parish as a secretary and office manager. "Like many Christians who are working to make the world brighter, she lets her light shine," said Msgr. Chris. "Judy radiates positivity and a cando attitude that springs from her love of God and her deep spiritual roots."

The tree - a Blue Spruce about 20 feet tall - is located on the front lawn of the parish which is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year.

Afterwards, the crowds are welcome for free snacks in the nursery school and to attend the annual Christmas concert at 7 p.m. in the church featuring St. Joseph's renowned choir. A free-will offering taken at the concert will benefit the Mercy INN soup kitchen in Wyandanch.

St. Joseph Church is located on 39 N. Carll Ave., Babylon, between the Babylon train station and Montauk Highway. For more information, call 669-0068, ext. 115.
