Rachel's Challenge is a program of inspiration and kindness that came out of the Columbine massacre in 1999. Rachel Joy Scott was a remarkable young woman who was among the first to be killed that day at Columbine High School. She was someone who wanted to her life to make a difference in the world, and thanks to her family and friends, she is making that difference through Rachel's Club, an offshoot of the Rachel's Legacy program that tours the country visiting school districts. In early October, West Islip Schools hosted Rachel's Legacy II, marking the third consecutive year Rachel representatives have met with both students and parents. At the Beach Street Elementary School, students have started a chain reaction of kindness and thoughtfulness under the guidance of family and consumer science teacher Denise Ciangetti, and tying in with the school's anti-bullying campaign. Among the club's many projects for the school year was to warmly welcome new students to the building. Together they played introduction games and ate nutritious snacks.
