BOCES to hold vote on construction

A proposal to replace a 36-year-old modular trailer at Western Suffolk BOCES will be the subject of a public meeting Wed., Dec. 5. The plan calls for using existing capital funds and will not cost taxpayers any additional money, if approved by the voters on January 29.

The public meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Brennan Middle/High School at 550 Mount Ave., North Babylon.

After studying the structural and mechanical problems of the aging complex, the BOCES Board concluded that the site was beyond any cost-effective method of renovation. The proposed $3.35 million capital project will, therefore, replace the modular portable complex with a 10,500 square-foot permanent addition to the main facility.

By state law, changing the footprint of a building requires a vote of the citizens of the district. Those 18 years of age or older who live in one of the 18 districts in Western Suffolk BOCES at least 30 days prior to the vote are eligible. Prior registration is not necessary.
