WB Taxpayers to host school budget informational meetings

After months of investigation into financial and budgetary conditions in the West Babylon School District, the West Babylon Taxpayers Association will hold an information meeting for residents and taxpayers of the West Babylon School to District to report on its findings. The meeting will be held Monday, Dec. 3, 8 p.m. at South Bay School, 160 Great East Neck Rd., West Babylon.

Most surprising of the Association's findings is the West Babylon School District's accumulation of a small fortune in reserve and surplus funds (known as Rainy Day Funds) over the last three years. From June 30, 2005 to June 30, 2007 the District's General Fund Balance rose from $6,775,676 to $11,478,763, an increase of 69.4 percent. During the same period the cost of living for the surrounding area increased by 9.8 percent.

It is the Taxpayers Association's position that a portion of the General Fund Balance can be used to hold the school tax rate for the 08/09 school year to a zero increase. The Association feels this can be accomplished without causing any reduction in staff, programs, transportation, sports, music or the district's bond rating.

The Association has attempted, through meetings and correspondence to engage the District Administration and School Board in meaningful discussions to commit to a zero increase budget for the coming year and has not met with any success in reaching that goal. The Association feels the only way to get the Board's and Administration's attention is to have residents and taxpayers attend the December 3 meeting to show support for the Association's proposal.

Transportation to and from the meeting can be arranged on a first come, first serve basis.
