Gifted math scholar in West Babylon school

Joseph Serigano, a senior at West Babylon Senior High School was recently named a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics by the Institute for Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY Old Westbury. As part of his acceptance by the Institute he was admitted this past summer to pursue math and science studies.

Admission to this program is no small feat. Serigano competed against 950 nominees from school districts all across Long Island. Selection by the Institute means that he is among the top one-tenth of one percent in math of all students on Long Island in his grade. Acceptances were based on several criteria including a rigorous exam and recommendations from math instructors.

Serigano will spend 60 hours in class over the course of 20 Saturday mornings. He also needs to complete 60 hours on related outside projects.

The curriculum sharpens mathematical intuition and develops an interest and enthusiasm for problem solving. Over the years many of the Institute's graduates have gone on to win prestigious awards, including national and international math, science and engineering contests. Every year, several students are selected to be Intel awardees for the national science search.
