Babylon Fire Dept. visits grade school

In recognition of October being Fire Safety Month and the need to educate students on the precautions to take prior and during a fire, Babylon Elementary School in the Babylon School District recently conducted informative fire prevention assemblies. During the programs students learned about the need for a predetermined escape plan in the event of a fire, the importance of household smoke detectors, and the different pieces of equipment the firefighters wear when entering a burning building, from local Babylon Fire Department firefighters. In addition to the informative programs, the students were treated to a puppet show that worked to reinforce the messages discussed during in-class visits.

At the end of the educational program, the firefighters encouraged the students to participate in the department's open house.

"Fire prevention is something that is imperative to teach students," stated Babylon Fire Chief Tony Davida. "The information that the students learn during Fire Safety month is something that could one day save their lives."

Shown in the photo, Babylon Elementary School first graders from Christina Smith's and Marje Hauck's classes were happy to learn about fire safety during the school's celebration of Fire Safety Month. The students proudly presented an art project the school created for the Babylon Fire Department. Joining the students were Chief Paul Twardy, firefighter Matt Arundale, Chief Kevin Morrow, Chief Brad Maier, and Chief Tony Davida.
