George H. Dein Jr., longtime resident of Babylon Village and West Islip

Longtime resident of Babylon Village and West Islip George H. Dein, Jr. died on October 27, 2007. He was 90.

He graduated Babylon High School in the 1930s and played football. He designed and built his home in West Islip and the family moved there in 1960. He worked for 30 years at Republic Aviation (Fairchild) in various capacities.

Mr. Dein was an active conservationist and sponsor in perpetuity of the nationwide group, Ducks Unlimited. He was the founder of the Babylon Rod and Gun Club and was active in the South Shore Camera Club in the 1940s. He was also a member of the L.I. Waterfowl and Wetlands League. In the 1970s, he orchestrated the sale of the B.R. & G. Club 40-acres Ronkonkoma property.

Then he helped locate and purchase the 400- acre Woolworth/Donahue estate in Manorville for the club. The site has a 38-acre lake and hunting lodge. The Babylon Club has since become the Peconic River Sportsman's Club, now with several hundred members and still active in land and wildlife conservation.

Mr. Dein is survived by his wife of 66 years Corinne Abbott of West Islip, daughter April Carabia of Mastic, son Jeffrey A. Dein and wife Candace of West Islip, sister Audrey Stark of Florida, grandchildren Jennifer Scheriff and her husband Daniel of Mastic, Julia White of Idaho, Michael Dein of Washington State and Jeffrey M. Dein of Idaho and six great grandchildren.
