Legislator Stern holds first hearing of County-wide underage drinking task force
Representatives of the County's Police Department, Probation Department, the Department of Health Services, the County's STOP-DWI Program as well as a representative from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), and Human Understanding Growth Seminars (HUGS), came together to hear testimony from experts as well as residents from the community. Chairman Stern said his vision for the task force is to address the complex issues surrounding underage drinking and its often catastrophic results. "Too many families and too many communities continue to experience the pain of loss and injuries to loved ones as a consequence of underage drinking", Legislator Stern said. Legislator Stern's legislation created this working task force that will study issues facing adolescents such as exposure to alcohol, peer pressure, the risk of carrying out or being a victim of physical or sexual assault or even death from injuries as a result of underage drinking. Among the many who testified were Martha Kahan, Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Jeffrey Ott and Donald Lasurdo, both with Daytop Village, Gerald Roucoulet, Long Island Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence, Anthony Ferrandino, Northport/East Northport School District Drug and Alcohol Counselor and many other concerned residents. All of the testimony given recognizes that the solution to the problem of drug and alcohol abuse within our schools and community is dependent upon a cooperative effort among parents, school districts and community. At the conclusion of the three public hearings, a written report will be submitted by the task force and will include recommendations for action to the County Legislature and the County Executive. The final two public hearings will be held on: •Wednesday, December 12, 2007, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m at the Westhampton Beach High School , 49 Lilac Rd., Westhampton Beach.
