Editorial
to Gov. Eliot Spitzer
Dear Governor: We were exceedingly pleased to hear that you have decided to pull your il-conceived proposal to award the privilege of drivers licenses to those individuals who have entered this country and this state illegally. We remain concerned, however, with the fact that you proposed this idea in the first place. At best it shows a complete lack of understanding as to the concerns of Americans and New Yorkers with regard to illegal immigration, and at worst a political arrogance that has permeated the halls of our state and federal government. What this has reminded us, Mr. Spitzer, is that as citizens we must maintain a constant vigilance of those public officials who would put personal and political expedience above the public interest, of those who do so under a misguided sense of compassion and justice that is targeted to instill a sense of guilt in the masses. Make no mistake about it, Governor, your efforts failed as will those of all Democrats and Republicans in Albany and Washington who continue to believe that they are going to ignore the demands of the vast majority of Americans by slipping immigration reform down our throats one policy change and one law change at a time. Immigration reform is needed, undoubtedly. Without it, we will continue to see hospitals closing because they are overburdened by the health care needs of illegal immigrants. We will continue to see stresses upon our educational and social services systems. Law abiding Americans will continue to pay for the abuses heaped upon them by illegal immigrants and a government that has refused to address all of these things in any real and substantiative way.
We would ask you and all political officials Mr. Governor, to think compassionately of those who put you into office and provide them with justice. While your concern about the plight of foreigners who sneak into our country is admirable, we suggest you take it up with their political leaders who are failing their people as well.
