Legislator Steve Stern honors local resident for "Distant Memories" swim fundraiser for Alzheimer's disease
Proctor recruited a team of volunteer swimmers and raised more than $8000.00 this year. "This is a way to raise money, but also to raise awareness about the devastating effects of Alzheimer's Disease," Proctor said Legislator Stern, Chairman of the Veterans & Seniors Committee, congratulated Bryan for his efforts and stated "what is so special about this event is that Bryan has shown all of us how a younger person can make a difference in our community. Bryan and his family have been touched by the terrible affliction of Alzheimer's disease and due to his personal experience, he has chosen to fight back, get involved and rally others as well. He is an outstanding example for young people to follow." Currently, nearly five million people are afflicted with Alzheimer's nationwide, with at least 55,000 cases on Long Island. The number will grow to more that 14 million nationally as the Baby Boom generation ages. The disease takes a terrible toll not only on those afflicted, but on their families and caregivers as well.
The Alzheimer's Association is the nation's leading voluntary health organization dedicated to supporting families and caregivers by providing vital programs and services in local communities nationwide. The Association is the largest private funder of Alzheimer's research. For more information about the Alzheimer's Association, please contact them at 1-800-272-3900.
