Travelers Club holds meeting

The second meeting of the Travelers' club was held at the home of Nancy Calabrez on Oct. 22.

Continuing the study of China, the first paper of the evening was presented by Jane Matlach who reported on the buried treasures of China.

The greatest archeological discovery of the 20th century was made by three farmers in China in 1974. They were seeking water for a new well and struck something hard. After clearing the soil from the object, they found an amazing pottery head of a man looking back at them. They had found the terra cotta warrior figures that the first emperor of China had buried to accompany him in death.

Qin Shi Huang ascended the throne in 247BC at the age of 13 and proclaimed himself First Emperor in 221BC. In ancient times, the Chinese believed that life after death was not so different than life on earth. The soul of the dead person could continue to enjoy all the pleasures of everyday life. So rich people build elaborate tombs and filled them with everything a dead person could possibly need or want. Qin wanted warriors to protect him in death too, and ordered terra cotta warriors and chariots to be buried near his tomb. Over 7,000 terra cotta warriors and chariots have been found in three different pits near his tomb. His tomb has never been opened. Now, some two million people from all over the world come to his burial site to see his wonderful army.

The second paper was read by Jocelyn Pisani who traced the Yin and Yang of Chinese medicine. The roots of traditional Chinese medicine date back more than 4,000 years.

Acupuncture is the practice most people think of when someone mentions Chinese medicine, but much more is involved. It also includes diet, exercise and herbals, many of which are still used today.
