Shirley Skeffington, well-known and beloved Babylonian
Born in Brooklyn, she grew up in Garden City and after spending many summers at Dalton Point in Babylon, she moved to Argyle Park permanently in the 1930s and spent more than 75 years there. Her grandfather, Charles B.J. Snyder was one of the founders of Dalton Point. For 35 years Mrs. Skeffington worked in nursing administration at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. She was a member of Babylon Business Women, Babylon Beautification, Babylon Auxiliary of Southside Hospital and a 62-year member of the Babylon Yacht Club. She also loved to spend time in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, attend performances the Gateway Playhouse in Bellport and gather with her friends and loved ones. "She loved to socialize and had many friends, in fact sometimes her own children had to make appointments to see her," said her daughter, Cynthia LaValle, laughing. She added that her mother especially enjoyed the Christmas season. In addition to her daughter Cynthia of Patchogue, Mrs. Skeffington leaves behind her other children: Susan Dottinger of Babylon, Priscilla S. Allers of Babylon, Edward E. Jr. of Seabrook, Texas and John H. of Oak Beach. She is also survived by her grandchildren, who called her "Grandshirl," Amy E. Dottinger, Kathyrn Leahy, Meghan R., Emily F. , Amanda K., Benjamin S., Bonnie, Brian, Michelle and Mark; by her sister, Elizabeth S. Orr of West Islip, and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Edward E. who died in 1985. A Funeral Service was held September 26, 2007 at Christ Episcopal Church in Babylon. Arrangements were made by the the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in West Islip. A donation in her name can be sent to the Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center Nursing Scholarship Fund, 1000 Montauk Highway, West Islip, NY 11795.
