by Mike Carmody

The young Panthers defeated Commack 18-6 at their homecoming game October 21.

The athletes received an invitation to start their day in the varsity locker room to hear about Babylon football traditions. The boys dressed in their all-black uniforms marched side by side along the Panther Paws yelling "Babylon Hits."

Babylon started the game with the powerful Panther defense. Commack's first drive was quickly shut down when they attempted a first down, 4th and 6, and defensive end Henry Brunjes went in sacking the quarterback.

Babylon, with great field advantage, takes over on their 32. Powerful Panther fullback Kyle Buser runs Babylon's first play crashing through the line for 3 yards. Halfback Zachary Carmody breaks two tackles going for a 20-yard gain and takes it in for a 9- yard touchdown on the next handoff.

Commack's second drive is an incredible 52-yards. The Panther defense quickly make adjustments, however.

Commack with a similar play, is quickly pushed back 6-yards by linebacker Thomas McHugh.

Commack off sides, move themselves back even further. On second down, Commack runs a reverse, and defensive Linebacker Matt Lauri makes a tackle in the backfield for a 2-yard loss.

Commack quarterback fades back and launches a 15-yard pass, which is knocked down by diving safety Zachary Carmody. Commack decides to go for its 4th down and 23. With a quarterback sneak, defensive end Jack Conlon runs him down for the second sack of the game with another 3-yard loss.

Babylon takes over their second possession on their 46. Babylon quickly moves down field with a hand off to halfback James Marron who runs 21 yards following a lead block by right wnd Steven Switzer, taking a linebacker off his feet. Quarterback Henry Brunjes pitches to halfback Zachary Carmody who runs into traffic and is helped by hustling center Alex Turri who blasts Carmody's pursuer enabling him to run for a 24-yard touchdown. Commack's third drive fell short quickly with two separate gang tackle sacks by nose guard Alex Turri and tackle John Botto who bulled their way through Commack's line.

Commack's next play fell apart when linebacker Dillon Dreher, blitzing through forces a quick pass, which is intercepted by safety James Marron, and runs 14-yards to the Babylon 47.

Babylon again has great field position within their own territory. Babylon starts their drive with halfback Thomas McHugh in motion and runs 22-yards downfield. Fullback Corey Harberg comes in and drives up the middle for another 5 yards. With seconds left in the half, quarterback Henry Brunjes fades back passing to tight end James Marron. Marron on the run catches the ball stiff arms a pursuer and runs for a 24-yard touchdown.

Commack started the third quarter like a different team. Fired up, they held Babylon's next offensive drive for the first time in the game. Commack, with good field position, drives the ball 35-yards for their first touchdown. Their extra point run attempt was foiled when defensive end Jack Faccibene knocked the ball loose, recovering the fumble.

Closing into the end of the third quarter Babylon crashes downfield using fullbacks Jack Krsesek, Jack Faccibene and halfback Derek Chapey. Babylon drives 60-yards and falls short of a first down at the Commack 37.

Commack takes the ball over with 3 minutes left in the game. Babylon defensive Linemen, Alex Turri, John Botto and Joe Punzone swarm in, enabling linebacker Christian Martino to wrap up to start the Panther fury. The Panther defense ends the game with tackle Joe Ponzone forcing the quarterback to scramble and linebacker Steven Schwitzer cleaning up on a hard hit, denying Commack a first down. Babylon takes over with 20-seconds left, ending the game with a Babylon Homecoming victory. Dems win big
