Many locals part of AMHS 1957 Golden Class reunion
In Amityville, the Class of 1957 graduated, and each student headed off to begin a new phase of his/her life, some staying close to home and some venturing far and wide. Last month, many of them gathered to celebrate the golden anniversary of that graduation. "It was a marvelous affair," said George Gifford of Oakdale who was a member of the committee that worked for two years to bring the event- and the former students- together. Every former student who attended received a name tag with a copy of their yearbook photograph printed on it. "There were some very unusual moments," recalled Gifford. "Someone would stand in front of you and say, Hi, I'm so and so, remember me?' " Most of the time, they did remember their former classmate and the yearbook photo helped, said Gifford.
"There was plenty of exchanging of stories and pictures going around," said Gifford. Winning the prize for having the most grandchildren was Anna Valente Ferrara of West Babylon. She has seven children and 14 grandchildren. High school sweethearts Arthur and Ada (Vitale) Giorgini won the award "Mr. and Mrs. Amityville" at the reunion as well as at their graduation in 1957. The couple have four children and 9 grandchildren and live in Amityville. Many of those who attended still live on Long Island, while others traveled from their homes in Florida, Upstate New York, and Paris (Paris, Illinois, that is). Winning the prize for traveling the farthest was Kenny Wood who now lives in Arizona. The idea for the reunion was started when Al Chambers of Florida sent around emails and made telephone calls to some of his former classmates asking whether a reunion was being planned. That caught the attention of Benny Morselli and his wife Camille of Islip Terrace who took the project under their wing, with the rest of the committee which included Lee Blumberg of West Islip, Judy Driscoll Skillen of Babylon, Patricia Galloway Knappe of West Sayville, Gifford, Arthur Johannesen of West Babylon, and Betty Neilson Palazzolo of Islip Terrace.
