Johnson has online petition to oppose MTA fare hike

All residents and commuters who are opposed to the MTA's proposed fare hike can visit Sen. Owen Johnson's website and sign his e-petition encouraging the MTA Board of Directors to reject the fare hike plan. The plan is expected to be voted on by the MTA Board at their December meeting.

Johnson explained that his petition is in response to the MTA's announced plans to raise LIRR fares by up to eight percent next year, with future fare hikes scheduled for 2010 and every two years thereafter.

"The bottom line is that the MTA is expecting to end this year with a surplus of $960 million," said Senator Johnson. "A fare hike is unnecessary and unfair. We need to join forces in order to stop this from happening."

Last month Senator Johnson joined members of the Long Island Senate Majority Delegation in writing a letter to the MTA Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Elliot Sander to express their shared opposition to the plan.

Babylon and Islip residents and commuters who want to add their names to Senator Johnson's petition and express their opposition to the proposed fare hike should visit Senator Johnson's website at www.senatorowenjohnson.net and click on "Join the Fight."
