Walter Hrynyshyn, lifelong West Islip resident

Lifelong West Islip resident and devoted family man Walter Hrynyshyn died August 20, 2007. "He always had friendly smile and was loved by many," said his wife, Alice.

Raised in West Islip, he graduated from the

Higbie Lane Elementary

School and Babylon

High School, where he was a star baseball catcher.

Mr. Hrynyshyn served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a high speed radio operator who sent messages in International Morse Code. For more than 40 years, he worked for New York State Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1993.

In his spare, time he enjoyed jogging, biking and playing golf and belonged to several bowling leagues. His favorite hobby was woodworking, and for each grandchild he carved a beautiful wooden duck on the day they were born. A longtime member of St. Joseph's Church in Babylon, for many years he served as usher for the 5 p.m. Saturday mass.

He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Alice; his children: Susan Huners and her husband Greg, Andrew and his wife Maribel; his grandchildren: Justine Huners, Chelsea Dorner and her husband Jim, Meagan Huners, Andrew, Kelsey and Morgan; He was predeceased by his son, Peter.

Mr. Hrynyshyn reposed at the Fredrick J. Chapey West Islip Funeral Home. A Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial was held on August 22, 2007 at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Babylon. Interment followed at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Babylon.
