Chamber fair and Fun Run draws thousands to Babylon Village
by Janine Logan
Babylon Village was a hub of activity on Saturday, October 13, 2007. The day began with the annual 5K Race and Fun Run sponsored by the Post Office Café to benefit the MPS Society. The all-day Merchant's Fair, sponsored by the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce, and the Apple and Art Festival, offered by the Conklin House, transformed the heart of the Village into a true festival.
"So many families and residents look forward to the Chamber of Commerce's Merchant Street Fair, along with the 5K Race and Apple and Art Festival," said Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino. "To see so many volunteers and mer- chants take part is truly a tribute to our Village."
Sunshine and warmer temperatures brought out runners, walkers, shoppers, and fair goers by the hundreds. Always a highlight, the 5K Race and Fun Run was another successful fundraiser for the MPS Society, which helps children and their families who are dealing with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). This genetic disease causes the body to not produce specific enzymes, which play a role in breaking down and recycling materials in the body's cells. As a result, these materials accumulate in the cells, causing progressive damage to body sys- tems. There is no cure. For more information or to make a donation visit www.mpssociety.org.
"We had a nice turn out," said Donna Consola, president of the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce and an event organizer. "The merchants did well. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed themselves."
The Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce's next event for merchants, Villagers, and visitors is the annual Old-Fashioned Night of Shopping set for Friday, December 7, 2007.
