Endorsements November '07 It is not easy to go before the public, outline a plan for governance, promote a political philosophy and ask for voters' support. Any candidate who assumes his or her role responsibly and seriously puts in a lot of time and money, and makes a personal commitment in order to provide voters a choice at the polls should be commended. Without the willingness of citizens to do this, particularly those who face strong incumbents, the democratic system of government we enjoy in this country would be nonexistent. We remind voters of this every year when we make our endorsements because it is important to recognize all those who have stepped forward to be a part of this process. Whether we support them here, whether they win or lose on election day, their participation, and the difficulties that it often carries with it, is without a doubt vital and admired. This year, voters are being asked to select who will represent them in Town and County government. Our choices have been made after conducting personal interviews and considering the backgrounds and qualifications of each candidate. Town of Babylon In this race, two political newcomers, Chris Connors and Phil Giambruno, both Republicans, are waging a political fight against incumbent Councilwomen Ellen McVeety and Jacqueline Gordon, both Democrats. There are two seats on the Town board. Connors has held his party's banner single handedly as his running mate has had some health problems throughout this campaign. He brings some ideas to the table and has worked hard. For that we commend him. Our endorsements go, without reservation, however, to Councilwomen Ellen McVeety and Jacqueline Gordon who have a record of service that is sterling, and who deserve to continue representing the people of Babylon. McVeety's experience in government and Gordon's background, combined with their ability to work with the solid administration of Supervisor Steve Bellone, makes them the best choice for 2007. Suffolk County Executive: Incumbent Steve Levy, a Democrat, is running for another four-year term with support from every other major party. That's no coincidence. During his tenure, Levy has managed to be on the right side of the issues-taxes, immigration, public safety, the environment and governmental reform. His commitment to the people of Suffolk, and his progressive leadership easily win him our endorsement again this year. Legislature In almost every race, relatively weak candidates are up against strong incumbents, both Democrats and Republicans. The two exceptions are Republican candidate Robert Cook who is seeking to oust incumbent Lou D'Amaro in the 17th District and Independent candidate Ed White who has waged an aggressive campaign against incumbent Elie Mystal in the 15th District. Both have raised the level of debate and done outstanding jobs of campaigning hard, with limited resources. Our endorsements go to the following candidates for Suffolk County Legislature based on their record, which we believe, earns them the privilege of continuing to represent the people of their districts for another two years: Democrat Wayne Horsley ( 14th district; ) Democrat Elie Mystal (15th district); Democrat Lou D'Amaro (17th district) Democrat Steve Stern (16th district), and Republican Tom Barraga (11th district). Those are our choices this year. But the decision is yours. Remember to get out and vote November 6. Alfred James,
