William Puglisi, former Deer Park School District president
by Tiffany Elliott

Longtime Deer Park resident William "Bill" Puglisi who tirelessly dedicated his life to educating local youth, died September 27, 2007. He was 57 years old.

He was a member of the Deer Park Board of Education from 1991 to 1997, and served as its president from 1996 to

1997. During and after

his service, he is cred- ited with opening the lines of communication between home and school, instituting student technology with computers and helping to improve many of the school buildings during the 1990s.

Long before his time of service on the board, he was involved in the schools through multiple PTA memberships and is credited with forging a path for many to follow.

"Bill was the first person who pushed me to get involved and stay involved with the school district. I will always be grateful to him and his wife for their confidence," said current board member Dennis Ryan.

Even after his time on the board, he stayed involved with the district by opening the doors of professional office to Deer Park High School government students at school election time to educate them on school government and provide them with an opportunity to become involved in the democratic process.

He reposed at the Mangano Funeral Home in Deer Park and was interred in Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn.

Mr. Puglisi leaves behind his wife, Marie; his children: Bill Jr. and Chris; as well as other family members and friends.
