Babylon Junior-Senior HS student named top scholar
Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently announced that as a result of exceptional scholastic achievements and academic promise, senior Yining (Nick) Shao has been named a Commended Student in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Out of the more than one million students who entered the competition, Nick placed among the top five percent on the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. Even though he will not continue in the 2008 Merit Scholarship program, his achievement is praiseworthy and merits high praise. For this honor, he received a letter of commendation and certificate from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, who conducts the program for this outstanding scholastic achievement.
Shao is an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar with Honor and maintains a rigorous course schedule at the high school. He is currently taking three AP courses, calculus, government, and literature and composition, as well as Spanish through Syracuse University and Marketing and Accounting with C.W. Post. Shao has also taken courses with The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY), for which his acceptance was determined by him taking the SAT in the seventh grade.
In addition to his extensive course load, Nick is the president of the high school's environmental club Roots & Shoots, as well as a member of the National Honor Society, DECA club, math team, student council, and Spanish Honor Society, and is a youth group leader at his church. He is the recipient of the Babylon Teachers Association (BTA) Award for Math and spent the past summer conducting independent research with a professor at St. John's University on anti-cancer drugs.
