Halloween is not a day off from civility
Editorial

Halloween is coming, and this is a good time to sit down with your children, particularly your teenagers, and discuss how to celebrate the event without causing problems , vandalism, loitering and other behaviors that are unlawful and unacceptable.

In Babylon Village last year, these incidents were prevalent and residents and local officials were concerned that it would happen again this year. As a result, there is a concerted effort on the part of the school, the Village and the police to ensure that young people who commit illegal or irresponsible activities will be held accountable.

But it is not only Babylon Village that faces this problem. It is in every community. Some young people think that Halloween is a day when all of the appropriate behavioral rules are suspended. They believe they have the right to do things that they would not ordinarily do. And while that is true to some extent- Halloween is a time to wear costumes and eat lots of candy- the holiday is not a free pass to poor behavior.

Our Police Department does its best on this holiday to keep the problems at a minimum, but the best prescription to law and order is parental involvement. Sit your children down, outline the rules and make sure they know they are being watched and monitored.

And, have a happy Halloween.
