Legislator Stern honors student for charitable work

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th LD awarded 10-year-old Jana Archila with a Proclamation at the August General Session of the Legislature in Hauppauge. Jana, a student at Thomas J. Leahy Elementary School, raised money through a lemonade and cookie sale to purchase school supplies for homeless children on Long Island. Jana raised one hundred dollars, which was matched by her parents and she bought notebooks, paper, crayons, pens and other supplies to help those less fortunate than herself.

The drive, sponsored by the Legislature, collected needed items to fill 1,000 backpacks for the upcoming school year. "Jana and her family are wonderful role models," Legislator Stern said. "Jana wanted to help other children and found a way, with her family, to raise and donate money for a worthy cause. The entire community is very proud of her and I am pleased to honor her today."
