Deer Park's come-back-kid wins prestigious County award

Shown in the photo, Suffolk County Youth Bureau Executive Director Louis Medina presented James Pozankowski with his plaque and certificate on the night of the awards banquet.
Deer Park High School senior James Pozankowski is the proud recipient of the Suffolk County Youth Bureau's "Celebrating Youth" Achievement Award. Presented by County Executive Steve Levy, Pozankowski was selected for this honor based on his demonstration of growth and personal achievement through adversity and challenges he has met and conquered during his life.

Deer Park High School Assistant Principal Mary Reynolds credits Pozankowski's success to, "his positive outlook, focus on the tasks before him, and the constant support system of his family who has stood by him every step of the way."

High school guidance counselor Noel Skelton, who nominated Pozankowski for the award, has witnessed his growth firsthand. "James is excelling academically with a 96 overall average and was recently selected as the Student of the Month. He is a model student who inspires his peers to reach their potential as well."

Pozankowski has emerged from his journey with the ability to reflect on and articulate his past and looks towards his future. "I finally found happiness in being myself and making decisions for myself. There are no words that are appropriate enough to describe how great making something out of a second chance feels. Everyday I'm blessed to be here and I am grateful too."
