West Islip teams win State Sportsmanship award

West Islip High School's sports teams and their coaches have won the New York State Good Sportsmanship Award for the second consecutive year, it was announced this week by West Islip Director of Athletics Wayne Shierant. The recognition comes from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) in honor of the sportsmanlike conduct exhibited in all athletic contests by West Islip High School athletes and their coaches.

Additionally, the West Islip teams have been recipients of the New York State Scholar-Athlete Awards for maintaining an above-90 academic average.

Shierant, whose official title is director of athletics, physical education, health and recreation, is pictured holding the 2007 plaque, presented to West Islip by Section XI Sportsmanship Chairman Jeremy Thode , shown left, who is also the athletic director for Commack Schools.

Shierant has gained respect throughout Long Island as the Suffolk County Athletic Director of the Year, and was honored several years ago with an induction into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame for his coaching achievements and record. Additionally, he is past president of the Suffolk County Athletic Directors Association and past president of Section XI (the governing body of Athletics in Suffolk County)

The Sportsmanship Award is presented to the high school that keeps sportsmanship in the forefront of its program with the athletes, students, coaches, spectators and communities.
