Sen. Johnson says legislators working to void Spitzer's driver license plan
Public Commentary

Dear Editor:

I was shocked to read your editorial in this week's Beacon entitled, "We hear the silence from Albany all the way here on Long Island." I am baffled as to how you reached the conclusion that local state lawmakers were "testing the political waters" before making any statements about the Governor's ill-advised policy to allow illegal aliens the right to obtain New York State driver's licenses. Make no mistake about it - I am adamantly opposed to the Governor's plan.

My record speaks for itself. As recently as June of this year, I voted for legislation that was approved by the Senate that would have required the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain proof from any applicant for a driver's license or non-driver identification card who cannot provide a Social Security number that they are ineligible for one. However, the Assembly refused to consider the measure. Current State Vehicle and Traffic Law specifically requires that applicants for a New York State driver's license provide a Social Security number.

Last month, I joined Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno in calling for a special session of the Legislature on October 22 to approve legislation that would specifically block the Governorfrom issuing driver's licenses to illegal aliens. This is a fact that has been widely reported throughout the state.

I want to assure you and your readers that I agree with your statement that the Governor's policy change would create "clear and present danger" for all New Yorkers. I believe that the Governor is dead wrong on this issue and that it is extremely poor public policy that needs to be stopped. This is why I intend to vote in favor of this legislation that would prevent the Governor's directive from taking effect.

Owen H. Johnson Member of the Senate
