GHS named number-one tissue donor on LI
In 2006, Good Samaritan realized an outstanding increase in consent rate for solid organ donation from 44 percent in 2005 to 86 percent in 2006. This resulted in eight solid organ donors and 17 lives saved through the process of organ donation. The hospital had 25 tissue donors in 2006. Making Good Samaritan the number one tissue donor hospital on Long Island and the second largest tissue donor hospital in the downstate area. The success is due to a strong commitment to process improvement by the Medical Center's nursing and medical staff, as well as hospital administration. There are currently more than 94,000 people on the national waiting list for solid organ donation. Unfortunately, 17 people die every day waiting for these life saving organs. With consent rates averaging between 50 and 60 percent, waiting lists are long across the country, but due to the demographics in the New York area, they are especially long. The average wait for a kidney in New York State is between three and five years. "You can make a tremendous difference in the lives of those in desperate need of organs and tissue by discussing with your family the desire to donate organs. Planning and making your decision known increases the chances that your wishes will be followed," stated Pat Hogan, RN, senior vice president of nursing at Good Samaritan.
