Dr. John Leitch, Jr. of West Islip, dedicated his life to education

A forty year resident, Dr. John Leitch, Jr of West Islip died on September 8, 2007. He was 78.

Dr. Leitch dedicated his life to education. He was the youngest appointed principal in the Ralph G. Reed Middle School on 200 Half-Mile Road in Central Islip and then became the principal of the Cordello Avenue School in Central Islip since 1957 for 27 years.

During his tenure at Cordello Avenue School, he wrote a fourth grade Social Studies textbook called, Exploring Long Island in 1960. He attended Shippensburg Pennsylvania University and received a Masters Degree from Hofstra University After he retired, he continued with his education, receiving a PHD from Walden University in Indiana.

After retiring, he also did consulting work for Larry Smith Architect and Dennis Fitzharris Insurance Company.

Dr. Leitch was married on April 24, 1964 to Barbara at the St. Lawrence Church in Sayville. He met his future wife when he was a life guard at Heckscher State Park and Jones Beach, "He had a nice Irish smile." his wife said.

He stayed active by golfing, cycling and playing tennis. "He was a good athlete." Mrs. Leitch recalls.

Dr. Leitch made an impression on Babylon Village Mayor, Ralph Scordino, "He was a great individual. He always had a smile and always had a positive attitude. That is something that you don't see in many people today." he said.

After 43-years of marriage Mrs. Leitch remembers her husband as a warm person with a good sense of humor. "He brought warmth to everyone he touched, he had a good sense of humor." she said.

He is survived by his son John III, daughter Victoria Faas granddaughter Meghan, daughter Sharron Donnally, and grandchildren, Timothy, Briana, and Kieran.

A religious service was held at Chapey's Funeral Home 1225 Montauk HwyWest Islip followed by interment at St. Joseph Cemetery at 39 Carll Ave in Babylon.
